SPACE WEATHER BULLETIN #00- 10
2000 July 14 at 10:14 a.m. MDT (2000 July 14 1614 UT)
**** RADIATION STORM OCCURS , MAGNETIC STORM PREDICTED ****
A large, complex sunspot group has produced one of the largest solar flares and associated radiation storms seen in recent years. The flare peaked at 4:24 a.m. MDT (1024 UTC) on July 14 and resulted in a radio blackout that reached R3 (strong) levels and a solar radiation storm that reached S3 (strong) levels. The solar radiation storm, which continues at the time of this advisory, is the largest observed since October, 1989.
Images from NASA's SOHO/LASCO spacecraft showed that a large, fast-moving coronal mass ejection (CME) followed the flare and is headed Earthward. NOAA space weather forecasters predict that the CME will impact the Earth's magnetic field on Saturday afternoon and will cause a geomagnetic storm that is expected to reach category G3 (strong) to G4 (severe) levels.
The radiation and geomagnetic storms are expected to produce adverse effects on spacecraft operations, power systems, high-frequency radio communications, and low-frequency navigation signals. In addition, the geomagnetic storm is expected to produce aurora displays that will be visible over much of the U.S.
The sunspot group responsible for this event will be visible from Earth until it crosses the Sun's west limb on July 21 and more space weather storms are possible until that time.
---------------
Aurora Alert: Sky watchers in both hemispheres are advised to watch for auroras during nighttime hours on July 14-15. The best times to see the Northern and Southern Lights are usually near local midnight. Tonight's nearly-full Moon will outshine faint Northern Lights, but intense aurora could be visible in spite of the lunar interference. http://www.spaceweather.com/

Security Scrapbook - A cautionary tale...

The following is a true behinds the scenes peak at how one customer's request for eavesdropping identification assistance was handled this month...
Very scary.
This is why it is so important to KNOW who you are hiring for your electronic eavesdropping audits.

Message from (an on-line) mailing list
Greetings:
I have an opportunity to bid on an electronic sweep to detect illegal transmitters and phone bugs for a very well-heeled corporate client. This could end up being a huge international contract, but it also may be a one-time job for one of the company's VPs.
I know nothing about this area of investigations!
What I'm looking for is someone to come in as a sort of limited partner and do the sweep working under my license (and do some training on me) for a 50-50 split of the fee. If our bid is accepted. The partner will need to sign a five-year non-competition contract with me regarding this client, but if things work out, I will probably need my partner's assistance for at least a year while I am learning the basics of this field. I will split all fees from this client with my partner during this year of training.
Now here's the rub, this company is a world leader in a certain field of electronic monitoring, so we will be working for engineers and scientists (that means the work we do must be super professional and able to withstand intelligent and knowledgeable scrutiny by experts in the field of electronic surveillance. In other words this must be much more than a dog and pony show. The expert/partner should have verifiable and deep countermeasures experience and the appropriate equipment!)
If this is something you are interested in and qualified for, send me a fax introducing yourself and detailing your qualifications. Please, no phone calls at this point because I simply don't have time right now to deal with a lot of phone calls. Although a lot of this is still vague, it may all happen pretty quickly. So far, I have the inside track on this opportunity, because of the recommendation of another client, but that may change in a heartbeat.
Thanks

Security Scrapbook - Industrial Spy: Operation Espionage - The reviews are in...
Wed, 05 Jul 2000
A few months ago I mentioned that yet another training tool for future spies was poised to hit the market. Our field had now become mainstream popular. The reviews are now in. Maybe we have nothing to fear.

Industrial Spy: Operation Espionage is one of those unfortunate games that's a great idea on paper, but a heinous crime against humanity in reality. When I read early press release info on ISOE, my mind was dazzled with the concept of controlling super agents who specialize in stealing top secret corporate information. It seemed like a refreshingly new backdrop for video game warfare -- instead of countries, it's companies at conflict. However, my first clue that the game would suck came during the intro sequence when scrolling text stated in dramatic font: "As the world enters the year 2000, large corporations have replaced governments as the sole source of political and financial power…." Uh, wait a second. Isn't that … this year?
