Subject: Ex-CIA Director confirms spying on US businesses.
Summary...
In a key note address, Robert Gates, director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from 1991 to 1993 said...
"To get this sensitive information, government intelligence services use many of the techniques developed during the Cold War, ... That includes bugging telephones..."
"...the French intelligence service is "probably the most egregious offender," it is far from alone, Gates (former CIA Director) said. Russia, China, South Korea, India, Pakistan, Germany, Israel and Argentina all have some type of intelligence-gathering operation for the benefit of companies in their countries, and Gates said many more countries are doing the same."
"...how to protect against them is not taught in business school." ( q.v. The Missing Business School Cources )

Security Scrapbook - Information Security... in the news.
Thu, 12 Oct 2000
To: Clients, colleagues and friends
Subject: Information Security -- a corporate viewpoint.
Summary: High tech businesses in Huntsville, Alabama readily admit Information Security is a high priority in their corporations. The article confirms our experiences over the last 20+ years...
"...only a small percentage of economic losses from intellectual property theft stem from foreign intelligence agencies or foreign competitors."
"...corporations perceive employees of onsite contractors and original equipment manufacturers to be the greatest threats to their information."
'''If someone broke in and rummaged through our papers, I wouldn't be as worried as if one of our top engineers went to work for a competitor.'''
Interestingly, each one of these jugular veins of information loss includes electronic eavesdropping issues which have to be tackled before the human element is scrutinized.
We visit Huntsville fairly often, but these are the same issues being faced by most businesses these days.
Sometimes there is comfort in learning... you are not the only one.
